What are the different types of Midwife?
What kind of Midwife support are you looking for?
Vorsorgeuntersuchung - Preventative medical care in your pregnancy.
Begleit Beleghebamme - Midwives who work in this system are able to support you in pregnancy, birth and into postpartum. They have a contract with you as well as a certain hospital that means in this hospital, they are able to use the birthing suites and medical doctors and by at your side throughout your birth. The downside - there aren’t many midwives who are able to offer this service because they have to pay all insurance costs themselves. However, if you are looking for a beleghebamme and aren’t able to find one, you may be able to have your Doula birth support paid for by your health insurance.
Wochenbettuntersuchung / Nachsorgeuntersuchung - Medical support from a midwife who comes into your home and supports you throughout the first year of your baby’s life. In the first few days after the birth, they are there every day, and gradually reduce their visits depending on you and your baby’s health.
Wochenbett-Ambulanzen - If you don’t have a midwife to support you in your postpartum period, these are places to go to have the check-ups your baby might need and to ask the questions you might have. These are run by midwives and have open drop-in hours. Some are found in local hospitals and some are in midwive’s private practices.
Get in touch if you have looked for a beleghebamme and are unable to find one - you might be eligable to have your birth doula fees paid for by your health insurance.
